Testimonials

"Research backs the wisdom of early brain development and of investing in the very early years of a child's life."
-Terry Minger, president and CEO of The Piton Foundation

"It's double the giggles and double the grins, but also double the worries about child care if you're blessed with twins, like Joni Gilmore. A single mom who works part-time as a certified nursing assistant, Joni's load is lighter because her 4-year-old boys attend the Early Excellence Program of Denver."
-The Children's Corridor

Mission

The Early Excellence Program of Denver offers high-quality educational services to children and provides job development and social networks for Colorado's most at-risk and needy families so that they may achieve self-sufficiency.

Background Statement

In 2003, the Piton Foundation founded Early Excellence as part of the Wyatt-Edison Charter School to provide a school readiness program for low-income families in the Denver-Cole Community. In 2007, Early Excellence became its own non-profit entity, governed by a board of directors.

Through high-quality educational programs, EEP works year-round to increase both the school readiness of children and the involvement of their parents. 94% of the families served are classified as "at-risk" because they have one or more of the following ongoing "at-risk factors" occurring frequently in their family: high poverty (TANF recipients), unemployment of one or more parents in the home, a single parent home, teen parent, violent gang affiliation, a family with a low level of education achievement (high school or less), homelessness, incarceration, sufferers of domestic violence, sufferers of child abuse/neglect, sufferers of drug/alcohol abuse, sufferers of violent crimes, dangerous housing conditions, lack of basic medical services, lack of basic living resources (food, water, heat, shelter, clothing), and/or lack of quality educational services.

Although Early Excellence has been in operation since 2003, it was largely impacted by the recent economic downturn while still adjusting to significant organizational change. It is only with ongoing fundraising efforts, and the generosity of individuals and businesses, that the Early Excellence Program of Denver can look forward to a bright future and difference-making work in the community for years to come.
